Along with Sai Gon, Independent Palace has gone through two most heroic and proud resistance of the country and its people. This place was honored by the government of Vietnam as one of the country's special historical monuments and preserved very long after as a witness to the heroic history of the nation.

Southern Governor's Palace (the first name of the Independence Palace) was designed and built to serve as the headquarters for the most senior officers of the French in Saigon. Later, when the American arrived in Vietnam to replace the French, it was reformed to be home for the presidents of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (The regime ruled by the Americans during the domination in Vietnam). Two presidents of the Democratic Republic of Viet Nam are Ngô Đình Diệm and Nguyễn Văn Thiệu.
On April 30, 1975, when the soldiers of the southern liberation army put their first flag with the yellow star on the roof of the palace, marks the glorious victory of the Vietnamese nation and opens up new pages of freedom history in the homeland. Since then, this building has been officially renamed Independent Palace.
