With the people of Sai Gon, perhaps no one does not know Nguyen Hue street - one of the most important street in the city. Previously, this street was known by the name "Nguyen Hue flowers street". From 2015 onwards, Nguyen Hue street was officially reformed by the Ho Chi Minh City government into a walking square to serve the entertainment needs of the city citizens. Looking at the modern street today, not many citizens of the city know that this road was originally a canal. History records that this canal was built by King Nguyen Anh in 1790. At the time, this canal was considered the most important way for the boat to enter the city. By the French colonial period, this place was the one very bustling the activity of the cloth trade. So people call this place is a canal of cloth market. Later, due to increasingly heavy pollution, the French filled the canal up and made into a large boulevard for traffic. At that time, the French named this road was Charner Avenue.
In 1956, when the Americans came to Vietnam to replace the French and built the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the road was renamed Nguyen Hue Boulevard and that name has been using until today.
Nguyen Hue walking street at day is not as crowded and bustling as night.
At night, Nguyen Hue Walking Street is the main recreation area of the city citizens.
Nguyen Hue is a ramp between the People's Committee of the city and the other side is the Saigon River. This street is 670m long and 64m wide, with both sides of the road still road for traffic (except on Saturday and Sunday evenings). The centerline is the pedestrian area. This area is completely granite paved with two fountains and green trees system spread on both side. Below is an underground system with a center that monitors all walking street activities such as lighting, water music, and modern toilet facilities.
Nguyen Huệ Street is opposite with the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City. On the picture is the statue of President Ho Chi Minh at one head of the road.
