Looking at the modern street today, not many citizens of the city know that this road was originally a canal. History records that this canal was built by King Nguyen Anh in 1790. At the time, this canal was considered the most important way for the boat to enter the city. By the French colonial period, this place was the one very bustling the activity of the cloth trade. So people call this place is a canal of cloth market. Later, due to increasingly heavy pollution, the French filled the canal up and made into a large boulevard for traffic. At that time, the French named this road was Charner Avenue.

In 1956, when the Americans came to Vietnam to replace the French and built the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, the road was renamed Nguyen Hue Boulevard and that name has been using until today.
